Veterinary Cannabis Counselor
The role of a Veterinary Cannabis Counselor (VCC) is to work with your veterinarian on providing a safe and effective treatment protocol for clients wishing to use cannabis products as part of their pets medical plan.
What you need to know:
Currently in Canada, there are no Health Canada approved products for veterinary use. For this reason, our veterinarians are unable to prescribe or recommend cannabis products for our patients. However, if this is an option you would like to add to your pets medical plan, Carol is fully trained to work with your veterinarian and guide on the safe addition of cannabis. Each consultation begins with discussing the goal of adding cannabis to a medical plan. Questions asked are: - What results are the owner, veterinarian, and cannabis counselor aiming for? - How comfortable is the client with administering, purchasing and monitoring their pet? The consultations also consist of a complete review of medical records including current medications/therapies in use, product analysis and guidance, and follow up until the goal previously established has been met. Throughout the introduction phase, dosing, and monitoring, Carol will keep in contact with the veterinarian overseeing the patient and will work with them to determine if the treatment is working and if other areas of the medical plan need to be adjusted (such as medication changes, therapy changes). No changes in prescribed medications or therapies will be discussed with the client unless the primary veterinarian agrees it is best for the patient.
